About Home Inspector by State

Home Inspector by State is a free reference site from Directory Assistance Group. It helps people find the official places to check a home inspector's license status, discipline, and complaint options in each state.

Why this site exists

Hiring a home inspector is an important step, but the rules around licensing and complaints are easy to misunderstand. Some states license home inspectors directly. Others do not. Some publish discipline in one place, while complaint instructions live somewhere else.

We built this site to make that first check easier. Instead of sending you through a maze of agencies and search pages, we point you to the official source and explain what to look for in plain language.

What you'll find here

Each state page focuses on practical basics: whether the state licenses home inspectors, which board or agency is involved, where to verify a license, where to look for public disciplinary history, and how the complaint process works. We also include a short 5-step check so you can review an inspector more carefully before you hire.

Who writes it

Home Inspector by State is published by Directory Assistance Group, an independent publisher of free lookup tools and directories, and is written and maintained by a small editorial team. We are not lawyers, engineers, doctors, or government officials, and we do not claim to be. What we do is read the primary sources (statutes, agency guidance, university extension publications, and official court and health-department pages), turn them into plain steps, and link every claim back to where it came from.

How the site is paid for

The site is free to use and is supported by advertising, clearly labeled featured listings, and a few Amazon affiliate links. Advertisers do not choose or review our topics, and payment never changes what a guide says or the official details we list. Read our editorial standards for how we pick sources, correct mistakes, and keep ads separate from content.

Tell us what we got wrong

Rules change and local details vary. If you spot an error or an out-of-date figure, please send us a note with a link to the source. We read every correction and date-stamp the fix.
